It took the efforts of one government hospital to discover the problem and finally Haruna delivered a healthy baby after being monitored by a specialist for about seven months.
This leads us to the conclusion that women should get first, second and even third opinions when they have symptoms of Gestational Diabetes, to satisfy their own health needs as well as their baby's. Far better to err on the side of being super-cautious, and to quote an old but useful clich -- better safe than sorry!

In one of the largest medical malpractice jury verdict in Michigan history, the family of a quadriplegic 15-year-old girl was awarded $130 million in damages by an Oakland County jury verdict.
According to her attorneys of Macomb Township, the mother of the girl was suffering from Gestation Diabetes and this caused the girl to be born being larger than normal. Attorney Geoffrey Fieger stated that the doctor who was in charge induced her for a vaginal delivery at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak instead of delivering her by cesarean section. This affected her and she got a brain damage and a broken clavicle and now has quadriplegia, which requires an all time care.
Fieger said that the doctor had crushed the life of the little girl evn though the officials of the hospital tried to prove that the girl's birth defects were genetic. It took about three weeks for the case to come to an end. The case was lead by Judge Rudy Nichols, and the jury took three days to make the crucial decision of this case that was filed in May 2006.
Although Beaumont officials said they will appeal the award, Halperin no longer works at the hospital according to spokesman Robert Ortlieb. Fieger explained that the award given was to take care of the cost of caring for Markell around-the-clock up to 2077 and her lost wages. This money will be stored with a conservator appointed by the court.
The original complaint filed by attorney Douglas Raymond of Lafayette, accused Halperin and Beaumont of not identifying that Markell's size needed a C-section and not acting to prevent injury to the baby.
