A Few Tips for your Botox Appointment

By Craig W. Nevilt

It may have been a recommendation from a friend, or a trusted colleague that solidified your position. Or maybe you saw an attractive ad or article about the benefits of Botox. Whatever it was, got you to this point. Now, it's up to you to prepare yourself for you Botox appointment. The treatments are quick and uncomplicated. As a result, you should be able to review in detail the procedure you are about to undergo. Knowing what to expect is the best way to insure your comfort and success as you prepare to use Botox to eliminate unsightly wrinkles or for one of its many other uses.

Again, the actual day of the treatment is pretty normal. There is no anaesthesia to take and very little preparation required. Likely, once with your doctor, nurse, or certified staff member, you will be asked to sit in a reclining, dentist-like chair. Knowing what you are trying to accomplish, the person administering your Botox treatment will likely ask you to contract specific muscles, then he or she will mark the injection locations.

Your Face After the Procedure

After the Botox injections, the affected area may exhibit small red dots. Instances of minor bruising or swelling have presented themselves in very rare cases. If that were the case, the simple application of make-up would cover that up until the bruising disappeared. This would likely occur within a few hours of the Botox treatment. Since this is a non-surgical treatment, there is no concern at all for facial scarring. A cold washcloth or some ice pressed on the injection site for a few minutes after the procedure will reduce any inflammation.

It's pretty common for doctors to provide some type of documentation to support recovery after your procedure. The Botox will take effect within the first few hours with full results visible within about a week, so be sure to schedule your appointment far enough in advance of an event to enjoy its full effects by that time.

What Will it Cost You?

One of the main reasons for the procedure's worldwide popularity is the price point of an actual procedure. A BOTOX session will usually cost between $300 and $400 per syringe. Of course, this really depends on the specific treatment you'll receive. Compared to other anti-wrinkle injectable treatments, only collagen will typically cost less than BOTOX. To maintain results, patients have to repeat the procedure every four to six months.

Side Effects of Botox

Though very rare, Botox side effects do occur. Usually, they're temporary, but they can sometimes last for several months. Depending on where you received the treatment, the side effects could vary. For patients with frown lines, the most common Botox related side effects include:

▪ headache

▪ respiratory infection

▪ flu-like symptoms
