The Important Facts Surrounding Very Low Calorie Diets

By James Steele

Very low calorie diets are just one possibility out of many different types of diets. You shouldn't try one of these diets without some medical advice as they restrict your intake of calories to very low levels. While doctors will sometimes recommend them to patients who need to lose weight quickly, they're not safe for everyone. In the following article we will focus our attention on some of the features of very low calorie diets.

The biggest advantage with a very low calorie diet is that patients who are obese and have a weight related medical issue can drop the weight very fast. It's possible to lose up to five pounds per week on such a diet, which means twenty pounds per month. For people who may have heart disease, high cholesterol, hypertension or diabetes, this can be extremely beneficial, even life saving. This type of weight loss is best done with the guidance of a doctor, especially if you're being treated for a health condition already. Working in conjunction with your doctor is essential for establishing a long term plan to maintain your weight loss.

The Rice Diet is a diet that was developed in the 1930s by a doctor named Walter Kempner, who found that a diet that consisted mainly of rice could be useful for treating certain diseases such as hypertension and kidney diseases. This is a low calorie diet that can also help people to lose weight. While rice isn't the only food you can eat on this diet, you will be eating rice along with anything else, so if you're considering this you have to like, or at least be able to tolerate rice! The most positive aspect of the Rice Diet is the ability to do away with unhealthy processed foods and is nearly free of fat, sodium and sugars. Most dieters may not wish to continue this food plan for any considerable amount of time; it is very intense.

When it comes to very low calorie diets there are drawbacks for your overall health. Fat is not all you will lose by restricting your calories, you will also lose muscle which can be bad for several reasons. Because everything is reduced in this diet so is dairy and calcium which can increase risk of osteoporosis for women. Without the calories you are likely to lack energy but you can work out to keep your muscle mass up. Anemia can be a risk in some cases. You should not consider a very low calorie diet if you are average weight, but if your health is threatened by your weight then it may be a good idea.

Very low calorie diets can be useful for short term weight loss, but their long term benefits are questionable. For people who are obese and under the supervision of a doctor this kind of diet may be appropriate. But for other people it's important that you are careful when it comes to the essential nutrients that are required by your body. You want to remain healthy and not only lose weight after all.
